Longer Lasting Milk
I'm single and live alone, so grocery shopping is an expensive routine. I buy milk by the quart, but I seldom drink it quickly enough to keep it from spoiling and having to throw it out when it is only half-finished. I have discovered that adding a pinch of salt to a quart of milk lengthens its shelf life enough so I don't end up wasting milk. A quart of dairy milk will last as long in the fridge with a pinch of salt as will a container of soy or rice milk. I have also used the pinch-of-salt trick to extend the shelf lives of other dairy products like cream cheese (for my morning bagels).

Pass It On
At my office, about eight of us discussed different books we have enjoyed reading. We started loaning each other books (we rotate them) and it is great! It's been a year and I have not bought one book but have read more books than usual. I suggest writing your name in the book so they remember who to return it to when done. We are talking about doing the same system with DVDs. Give it a try in your office or neighborhood.

Preventive Savings
Sometimes spending a little may save you a lot. Get annual check up tests! A pap smear may cost you $100, but if it prevents you from having to face radiation and chemo from a cancer that has spread, it will save you thousands. It is so easy to let checkups, dental exams, etc. go, especially when we are feeling like money is tight. Please find a way to stay on top of your health and take care of yourselves. My best friend just found out she has uterine cancer and it has spread. While it's nice to save money, it's always better to save your health.
